Alibaug is a coastal town and municipal council in Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. It is the headquarters of the Raigad district. Alibaug is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and is situated at a distance of about 96 km from Mumbai and 143 km from Pune.
Alibaug is an idyllic town on the western coast of India, known as the Konkan region. It lies on almost the same latitude as the southern tip of Mumbai.
Revdanda, Chaul, Nagaon, Akshi, Varsoli, Thal, Nagaon, Kihim, and Aawas villages were known as "Ashtagare".
Alibaug and its surrounding villages are the historic hinterlands of Bene Israeli Jews. There is a synagogue in the "Israel Ali" area of the town. A Bene Israelite named Ali used to live there at that time. He was a rich man and owned many plantations of mangoes and coconuts in his gardens. Hence the locals used to call the place "Alichi Bagh"(Marathi for "Ali's Garden"), or simply "Alibaug", and the name stuck.
Alibaug has lovely beaches that are unspoiled. The hill range of the Western Ghats lines the other side of the city giving it a unique character of greenery and the blue of the ocean. It's a wonderful place to take a relaxing vacation or party. It is also a popular center for business conferences during weekends.
Alibaug is very popular with Mumbai's affluent residents. Most of them own farms and bungalows here which are often a few hundred meters from the seashore.
